CRIME PREVENTION TIPS

The most common crimes in our neighborhood are BMV's (Burglary of a Motor Vehicle).   Many of these BMV crimes are completely preventable because they occur on "UNLOCKED" vehicles.

Here are a few additional helpful tips for crime prevention:

*Lock your car & home

*Make sure to take all items out of your car.

*Ensure your car is parked in garage or driveway.  Never on the street.

*Check out the lighting around your car and home.  Make sure that the areas are well lighted at night.

*Make sure your house numbers are visiable from the street.  If you can't see the house number, how do you expect the fire, police or ambulance to find your house in an emergancy.   If your numbers are at the curb but cars are always parked there consider adding visiable numbers to your house also.

*Consider installing dusk to dawn lighting sensors.  Darkness has a way of inviting unwanted people.

*Keep shrubs trimmed especially around doors & windows, to eliminate potential hideing places for intruders.

*Keep sheds & gates locked.

*Keep your garage doors closed & locked when you are not in the garage or in sight of the garage door.  Many thefts happen while people are doing yard work and leave their garage doors open while they are in the front yard or in other areas out of sight from the garage door.

*Have neighbors pick up newspapers & mail if you are out of town.

*If you know you will be out of town, let your block captain know or a VIP member.  It is a great way to help us all look out for each other.

*If you have an alarm, make sure your signs are visible and not hidden by bushes or plants.

*Assure that you have VISIBLE address numbers on the front and alley sides of your home.   This if for your satefy and for any emergancy vehicle looking for your property.  The alley signs are important, because when the VIP members are patrolling they sometimes need to determine the correct address where something suspicious has occurred.  Cell phones are used by the VIP members to notify police of a crime or suspicious activity.  But it is important to have your address with the street name on the back of your house or fence in the alley.  Additionally, It is sometimes necessary for emergency vehicles to approach your home from the alley side and the emergency responders need to see an address to assure they are in the right place.
